Childhood obesity has more than doubled in children and tripled in adolescents in the past 30 years. That number has been predicted to increase by more than %25 over the next 10 years. Childhood obesity has both immediate and long-term effects on health and well-being.
Obese youth are more likely to have risk factors for cardiovascular disease, such as high cholesterol or high blood pressure. In a population-based sample of 5- to 17-year-olds, 70% of obese youth had at least one risk factor for cardiovascular disease and over 81% had signs of pre-diabetes. Children and adolescents who are obese as youth are %87 more likely to be obese as adults than others.
That number is why we created our FitKidz program. We wanted to create a program that combines a cardio workout with strength and flexibility exercises for children who are now at the age when they are surrounded by the sedentary distractions of TV, the Internet and video games. Endurance and gross motor skills are increased through a series of exciting and dynamic activities of the families choice. Confidence soars as our FitKidz develop skills such as passing, catching, hitting, kicking, jumping, throwing, etc. while learning to play baseball, football, soccer, basketball, hockey, tennis, and more. The four-week curriculum for each sport includes exercise and fitness training, basic rules and definitions, court or field layout and skill drills. As we focus on specific muscle groups, utilize a station circuit-training courses, and add fun nutritional tips, our goal in this 45 minute program is to instill health and fitness as a fun way of life.
